About the Department
Medicine and Biological Sciences Development’s mission is to inspire and facilitate philanthropy at the University of Chicago Medicine by building relationships with those who share its goals of advancing excellence in research, education, community, and patient care. We accomplish this mission through expertise, integrity, creativity, and collaboration.
The job manages a University-wide development program focused on foundations, corporations, fundraising associations and other institutional sources of philanthropic support. Monitors the setting and the achievement of fund raising goals with minimal guidance from others.
- The Associate Director is responsible for raising $1M to $5M annually to advance the fundraising priorities as established by the Leadership Team of Medical and Biological Sciences Development (MBSD) and the CEO/Dean of the Medical Center.
- The Associate Director is responsible for sustaining and building relationships with and support from foundations.
- They will manage a portfolio of 50+ prospects, which are independent philanthropic foundations or corporate foundations.
- Designs and implements fundraising initiatives including identification, qualification, cultivation, and solicitation strategies for foundations with the capacity to make gifts in the $50K to $1M range.
- Takes initiative to identify matches between foundation funding guidelines and existing UCM programs, and in turn to market foundation funding opportunities to faculty.
- The Associate Director collaborates with Medical Center faculty, volunteer leaders, and administrators. They are responsible for maintaining contact with and serving as a Foundation and Corporate Relations liaison to Medical Center Departments and Programs determined by the Executive Director, Foundation and Corporate Relations.
- Works with MBSD’s Leadership Team, Medical Center faculty, volunteers, and MBSD staff to identify and qualify foundation prospects. Qualifies foundations, rating their capability and likelihood to make a philanthropic gift to MBSD. In addition, participates in Outreach Events to meet, identify, and qualify prospective foundation donors.
- The Associate Director is expected to develop and maintain relationships with foundation donors, foundation staff, and foundation trustees, including identifying opportunities for interaction with faculty and other individuals who have the ability to deepen the prospective donors’ engagement with the University.
- Meets independently with program officers and other foundation contacts as well as arranging site visits and meetings involving faculty, administrators and trustees.
- Writes briefings to prepare participants for cultivation visits. Writes timely and strategic correspondence that advances relationships and thus keeps prospects involved and informed of ongoing projects.
- Conceives of and implements solicitation strategies including writing presentations and proposals that secure gifts.
- The Associate Director ensures that gift acknowledgement is done in a timely, personalized, and expert manner.
- Conceives of and implements stewardship in accordance with MBSD policies and procedures and the foundation donors’ guidelines/requirements.
- Works with others to manage requests for support, prepare required reports, and develop and implement ways to promote, cultivate, and steward foundation activities across campus. Defines and coordinates opportunities for inclusion of foundation representatives in campus activities and special programs, both as cultivation for new grants and as stewardship for existing grants.
- Meets with prospects through personal visits, phone contact, and by promoting program benefits. Helps in developing proposals and raising gifts from corporate donors for all restricted corporate gifts, including identification of opportunities, composing solicitation letters, communication with the prospects, and supervision of the gift acknowledgment process.
- Performs other related work as needed.
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.
Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
- Three years of progressively responsible professional experience, and success securing foundation grants.
- Experience with basic fundraising research techniques and resources.
- Demonstrated experience with fundraising programs.
- Excellent written and communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal communications.
- Ability to maintain confidential information.
- Strong organizational and analytical skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Strong computer skills including work processing, database management, and spreadsheet.
