About Step Up 

Step Up Tutoring is a California-based non-profit organization that drives student success in under-resourced communities by providing free virtual tutoring and mentorship to elementary school students. Step Up recruits, trains, and supports engaged and motivated tutors to deliver virtual high impact tutoring for students in grades 3-6. In partnership with Los Angeles Unified School District and others, we have served 2,500 students to date.  Our aim is to scale impactful and cost-effective relationship-based tutoring, so that it is accessible to every child in need in America.

 

The Role

Step Up Tutoring is seeking to hire a Development Director to build our growing organization’s development and lead strategic fundraising and stewardship activities. This person will report to and collaborate with the CEO and will work closely with our Board of Directors.

 

Responsibilities

  • In partnership with the CEO and Board Development Committee, develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising plan that includes identifying, cultivating, and soliciting individual and corporate donors, grant writing, and planned giving
  • Drive donor cultivation through a highly organized process, working closely with the CEO and Board of Directors, including developing compelling program materials, conducting effective meeting preparation for senior staff and facilitating timely follow-up
  • Lead development of campaigns, including strategy, tactics and execution, working with CEO, Board, marketing, and partnership teams
  • Manage day-to-day operations of the development department, including overseeing donor recognition and stewardship activities, monitoring progress towards goals, and providing regular reporting to board of directors and other stakeholders on the department’s activities and outputs

 

Lead fundraising activities across four key categories of giving:

Foundation Grants:

  • Manage grant solicitation and reporting processes, resulting in the growth and diversification of mission-aligned grant support for the organization
    Facilitate the development of grant proposals and related materials including compiling program information and outcome metrics and developing detailed budgets
  • As needed, oversee contract grant writers and other support providers
    Research new grant opportunities and prepare recommendations on relevant prospects

 

Individual Prospective Donors:

  • Develop & execute process for cultivation of high net worth individual donors
  • Draft and manage communication with family foundation/individual prospective donors, introduced by leadership and board members
  • Create and customize presentations for prospective donors and their staffs
  • Support CEO and board members in solicitation efforts and lead development

 

Corporate Engagement

  • Work with Step Up Tutoring’s Director of Community Outreach to help prepare materials for corporate engagement (pertaining to corporate grants, volunteer engagement programs, employee matching contributions, and other in-kind donations)
  • Support engagement with corporate foundations
    Government Grants
  • Research and vet relevant governmental (federal & state) funding opportunities and prepare recommendations for leadership
  • As needed, recruit expert resources for governmental funding
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure effective communication and alignment of fundraising efforts with programmatic goals
  • Ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations governing nonprofit fundraising and stay up-to-date on developments in philanthropy and nonprofit management and incorporate best practices into the organization’s fundraising efforts

 

Requirements

  • Commitment to the Step Up Tutoring mission
    Demonstrated track record of fundraising success for nonprofit(s) in education or related fields
  • Creative strategist with experience running successful fundraising campaigns involving high net worth individuals and foundation partners
  • Experience working with diverse funding streams, including at least three of the funding sources listed above
  • 5-10 years of experience with progressive levels of fundraising responsibility and leadership
  • Strong understanding of the principles of fundraising
  • Skilled in relationship-building and stewardship
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong project management and organizational skills
  • Sense of urgency and commitment to deadlines and responsive communications
  • Understanding of key trends in education, including tutoring and mentorship
  • Ability to work effectively in virtual environments

 

Salary and Location 

  • Salary range of $80,000-$105,000, commensurate with experience
  • Remote location
