ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Under the direction of the Assistant Controller, this position processes semi-monthly payroll and assists with payroll-related requests and tax filings for all corporate staff.
LOGISTICS
Internews has US offices in Arcata, CA and Washington, DC which support a hybrid workforce with staff working remotely, fully in-office, or partially remote. This is a remote-based role, and candidates based anywhere in the United States will be considered. Our ideal candidate is based in the Pacific time zone.

DAY-TO-DAY TASKS will include:
- Ensures corporate payroll is accurate and completed in accordance with payroll dates.
- Maintains and monitors timesheets for accuracy. Ensures all necessary approvals and leave time usage is in adherence to agency policy.
- Reconciles general ledger balance sheet accounts related to payroll on a monthly basis.
- Responds to requests for payroll-related information such as labor or leave balance requests.
- Prepares and enters journal entries into the accounting system including but not limited to monthly vacation liabilities and advance-related entries.
- Monitors employee advance accounts and HR-related allowances such as 401k and HSA balances.
- Monitors all payroll-related deductions.
- Processes all retirement/pension deferrals and related payments to 3rd party administrators as required by law.
- Assists payroll team with payroll tax payments, tax filings, personnel file maintenance, and audit documentation.
- Maintains confidentiality in all payroll and personnel matters.
- Recommends actions to be taken for identified financial and business risk situations and participates in the continuous improvement of payroll processes.

QUALIFICATIONS WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Required
- Minimum one year of payroll processing experience.
- Associate’s degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school.
- General knowledge of not-for-profit Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Technical and logistical problem-solving capabilities and ability to manage competing deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.
- High degree of social adaptability and sensitivity to cultural differences.
- Intermediate MS Office Suite skills, particularly Excel.
Excellent organizational skills.
Preferred
Note: Candidates who do not have these preferred qualifications, but who are interested and willing to learn, are encouraged to apply.
- Experience in multi-state payroll.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field.
- Experience with enterprise-level non-profit accounting software.
