WE SUPPORT, PROMOTE, & ADVOCATE FOR LOCAL FOOD & LOCAL PRODUCERS

The Market Manager is a motivated individual who helps fulfill our nonprofit mission to support, promote, and advocate for the farmers, vintners, fishermen, and other food producers and providers on the East End of Long Island. The Market Manager reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for the smooth operations of the East End Food Market in Riverhead and collaborates significantly with the Associate Director to operate the Virtual Farmers Market. Other duties will be assigned as necessary. Some evening and weekend work is required. Remote work is permitted where responsibilities are compatible.

Primary responsibilities are as follows, with other projects assigned as needed:

Market Management

  • Take the lead on operations for the East End Food Market, including vendor onboarding and market management before, during and after the market days.
  • Explore the development of a weekday wholesale market for farmers and food producers to sell to retailers, restaurants, and institutions.
  • Determine the eligibility of vendors to sell at the market as well as seeking out new producers to expand variety at the market.
  • Collect required documents and fees from producers.
  • Ensure all applicable licenses, permits and insurances are up to date.
  • Assign booth spaces to vendors and collaborate with other nonprofits, musicians and artists to create a place where the community can gather.
  • Establish & maintain relationships with current & potential market vendors.
  • Coordinate staff and volunteers to set-up, and clean-up in-person events serving farm and food businesses and the general public at the East End Food Market in Riverhead.
  • Recruit and onboard new suppliers and customers for the Virtual Market using applicable software, including all East End Food Market vendors who wish to participate.
  • Coordinate order fulfillment for the Virtual Market including communications with customers & vendors regarding sales and pick-up/delivery times.
  • Collaborate with Associate Director as needed.
  • Collaborate with Outreach & Education Manager to understand school procurement challenges and adjust the offerings and experience of the Virtual Market accordingly.
  • Supervise Market Crew Members. Assign additional projects when market days are slow.
  • Train Market Crew Members on new tasks to the level of their competence and availability. Delegate tasks to Market Crew Members as relevant.
  • Attend public events to serve as an ambassador for our work, as needed.
  • Maintain an organized & sanitary environment in the market facility by working with Market Crew Members to complete daily, weekly, quarterly, and annual cleaning projects as designated by the EEFM Cleaning
  • Schedule, with support from Associate Director as needed.
  • Be alert to food safety issues and commit to reporting and addressing issues as needed.
  • Other tasks, as assigned.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A passion for supporting and advocating for sustainable and local food production.
  • Self-starter who can work on a variety of projects and tasks simultaneously, and prioritize with limited supervision and guidance.
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Physical ability (with reasonable accommodation) to lift and move items weighing up to 30 lbs and personal transportation to visit local farms, schools, and other locations.
  • Valid Suffolk County Food Managers Certificate or Serv-Safe Food Manager Certificate, or willingness to obtain.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience as a farmers market manager or coordinator.
    Farmers Market Manager Professional Certification from the Farmers Market Federation of New York, or willingness to obtain.
  • Knowledge about NYS Ag & Markets regulations
  • Experience with farming, food preparation, food service, or manufacturing.
  • Exceptional community building skills. Strong writing, speaking and presentation skills.
  • Experience with Google Apps, including Gmail, Drive, and Calendar.
  • Ability to learn new software such as Local Line and The Food Corridor, for managing programs and transactions.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.

$25 per hour – up to 40 hours weekly. Daily shift meal (when working at Southampton location) and on-site gym access for all employees. Health insurance ($250 employer contribution), dental insurance, flexible spending account, and other benefits after 90 days of working 30+ hours per week.
