WELCOME
Dear Colleagues: How appealing is the job of executive director? Last September, four organizations - CompassPoint Nonprofit Services, the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the Eugene and Agnes Meyer Foundation, and Idealist.org - surveyed 6,000 potential nonprofit leaders from around the country (including Washington, DC ) to find out if they aspired to be nonprofit executive directors. The results, detailed in Ready to Lead? Next Generation Leaders Speak Out, suggests that there are significant barriers that may prevent young nonprofit professionals from pursuing an executive director position. Here are a few other findings from the survey:
You can read the complete survey at www.meyerfoundation.org or www.compasspoint.org.
As an organization dedicated to preparing the next generation of nonprofit leaders, YNPNdc takes these survey findings very seriously. In the past two years, we have held a number of events focused on nonprofit leadership and the leadership gap. At these events, our members have voiced concerns about the same issues highlighted in the survey - poor pay, lack of work-life balance, need to pay off student loans, etc. Our goal has been to bring these concerns to the attention of nonprofit leaders and to proactively seek solutions to these challenges. As the survey suggests, we still have a lot of work to do.
For those of you interested in learning more about becoming an executive director or a senior leader at a nonprofit, we encourage you to register for "A Conversation on Nonprofit Leadership in the 21st Century," taking place Thursday, April 3 from 8:30 am - 10:00 am. This event will consist of small group conversations between YNPNdc members and more than a dozen Washington area nonprofit leaders and innovators. Groups will be organized around topics of common interest such as establishing a career in development, working in nonprofit communications, becoming an executive director and more (you will have an opportunity to indicate your personal interests when you register). For more information and to register, visit http://ynpndcleadershipdialog2.eventbrite.com/ (the cost is $20).
We hope to see you on April 3! Sincerely, Laura Walling and Brian Flahaven Co-Chairs, YNPNdc

YNPNdc Board Member Dan Poux facilitated "Retooling Your Resume" on March 6, leading participants through a series of exercises designed to showcase one's accomplishments. "Frequently, folks write a lot about what they did on their resume, but they don't say anything about why they did it or what the outcome was," Poux explained. "Prospective employers are looking for problem-solvers, so you need to show them how you took on a challenge and achieved results." The workshop was attended by 28 YNPNdc members, and they gave it high marks for its relevance and usefullness. Participants asked for future career advancement workshops, so YNPNdc has scheduled a session on interviewing and negotiating for May. |

YNPNdc Board Member Regina Dull, executive director of International Student Conferences, was quoted in "The Young and the Restless," which appeared in the March 6 The Chronicle of Philanthropy. The article, focusing on the Ready to Lead report mentioned above, outlines tensions that exist between the up-and-coming leaders of nonprofit organizations and their more seasoned peers, in terms of their management and leadership styles. Dull discussed her experiences as a 28-year-old executive director. She admits that when she applied for the job three years ago, she thought, "Wait a minute. Am I ready?," but she is hopeful that she and other young executives can bridge the leadership gap. "I have confidence that the next generation is going to do an excellent job," she says. "The difficult part is going to be gaining trust. And we need to do it in a way that recognizes all the work that's been done before us."
